Obituary

Virginia Zorn-Joyner, 98, passed away at St. Joseph’s Hospital under Hospice care on April 30, 2026.

Virginia was born on April 9, 1928, in Long County, Georgia to Ellen Cecil Wheeler and Eugene Bacon Wheeler, the youngest of 4 children, sisters Frances, Katherine (Kitty) and brother Fred who have predeceased her.

Born and raised in rural Long County, she attended and graduated from Ludowici High School, it was during this time where she met her first husband Louie Alvis Zorn d. 1998. Married for 50 years, she had four children Deborah Lynn Zorn of Fletcher, NC., Barbara Gail Zorn of Valdese, NC., Roger Dale Zorn d.2011 (Shellie) of Savannah, GA, Phyllis Luann Zorn-Zipperer (Mark) of Pooler, GA.
She was proud of her four grandchildren, Jennifer Graves, Jason Zorn (Jennifer), Kevin Zorn (Sarah), Jessica Zipperer (Jimmy Donnelly) and delighted by her great-grandchildren located both near and far, Grant Graves, Grace and Stephen Sullivan, Ava and Alex Zorn and the newest addition Roman Donnelly.

Outside of the time she spent raising four children, Virginia had a long and stellar career in the banking industry. She was employed in this industry before her children arrived, in the small town of Hinesville where she grew up and in Savannah once her children were independent. She loved the connection to her colleagues and to community members that frequented her teller station. She developed lasting relationships and always considered those community members ‘her customers’.

Before and after her third retirement, she was active in several volunteer groups that contributed to the welfare of her community. In the 1960s she was a member of the AMDOES, an auxiliary of the American Business Club (AMBUCs), an organization that benefited children’s welfare. In later years she joined and held leadership positions in her local Garden Clubs and was instrumental in the creation, development and promotion of Tribble Park in the Windsor Forest area.

She was widowed, in 1998, after fifty years of marriage to Louie Zorn, and several years later married James (Jay) Joyner only to be widowed again in 2013.

In her final years, she moved to the community of Savannah Square where she cultivated many caring friends and created a renowned patio garden that she carefully tended until her advancing age required that she take a ‘supervisory’ role leaving the bulk of the physical tasks to her children.

She was a loving mother, a patient and entertaining grandmother and great grandmother.

She was truly the quintessential southern lady and will be sorely missed by all that knew and loved her.

The family wishes to extend a special thanks to the caring staff of Vickie’s Helping Hands.

A graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, May 8th, 2026 at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens (315 Greenwich Road, Savannah, GA 31406).
