Vincent
Helmly Sr
Mar 24, 1944 — Jun 16, 2026
Vincent Helmly, Sr., age 82, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, after a long battle with melanoma.
Vince was born on March 24, 1944, in Savannah, GA, to Keevil Helmly, Sr. and Mae Vincent Helmly. He attended the rural one-room Bethel School during his elementary years, skipping an entire grade and developing lifelong friendships. Vince graduated from Savannah High School. He attended Armstrong College of Savannah. Vince enjoyed a successful high school and early college basketball career.
Vince graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering; however, he fell in love with land surveying and became a well-respected, registered land surveyor in the greater Savannah area for 50+ years, owning his own business with a great reputation for his more-than-fair prices and loyal repeat customers, all the way into his golden years.
Vince will be remembered for his: faith and walk with the Lord Jesus Christ and his service to his church family; long, respected career as a registered land surveyor; love for hunting, fishing, dogs, horses, and the outdoors; questionable-but-delicious wild game contributions to family dinners; devotion to family; love for watching sports; and his inability to tell a joke without getting so tickled he almost couldn’t finish telling it.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Helmly, who was his tireless caregiver during his difficult final years with melanoma; his children, Melissa Pavo, Phillip Pavo, Jr., Kristen Kohan, and Vincent Helmly, Jr.; his grandchildren, Kalani Zehr (Elana), Melika Zehr (Jonah), Kimberly Kirkwood (Josiah), Jocelyn Zehr, Brock Pavo (Nevaeh), Nadia Pavo, and Alexis Camacho; two great-grandchildren, Brody and Hudson; brother, Keevil Helmly, Jr. (Becky), sisters-in-law, Loxie Lamar and Dianne Robinson (Terry); and many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
Vince was preceded in death by his parents, Keevil Helmly, Sr. and Mae Vincent Helmly; his sister, Tirzah Jones (Jimmy); his brother, Israel Clinton Helmly; and his grandson, Melvin Zehr III.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Silk Hope Baptist Church, 4929 Pineland Dr., Savannah, GA 31405. The funeral service will follow from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. at Silk Hope Baptist Church, officiated by Rev. Jonathan Phillips and Rev. Dusty Reynolds.
Burial will follow at Bryan Neck Presbyterian Church Cemetery, 7196 Belfast Keller Rd., Richmond Hill, GA 31324.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Silk Hope Baptist Church, 4929 Pineland Dr., Savannah, GA 31405, in memory of Vincent Helmly, Sr.
Vince is at home with the Lord Jesus Christ and suffering no more. To quote Vince’s most often used statement, “Glory to God!”
