Mrs. Tommie Wynelle Tuten, age 97, of Springfield, went home to be with our Lord on Saturday, August 29, 2026 surrounded by her loving family.

Nell was born in Emanuel County on February 12, 1929 to Dewy and Ila Mae Burroughs Williams. Her mother passed away when she was just six years old. Her father married Ruby Turner who loved and raised Nell, her brother, and her two sisters as her own.

Nell married Ira T. “Pete” Wells in 1947 and they had two children, Neva Mae Wells and Ira Micheal “Mike” Wells. She and Pete would later divorce and she married James Eugene Tuten.

Nell and James enjoyed countless hours of playing cards with friends. They loved to camp at Clarks Hill Lake and had many fishing adventures together. Nell always wore her life jacket while fishing, as she never learned how to swim. A fish fry with family and friends would always follow a day of fishing.

Nell grew up during hard times and saw many changes during her 97 years. From working in cotton and tobacco fields with a mule and plow to working shift work at union camp where she was a bag catcher. She retired in 1991 after 38 years of service.

Nell was a woman of strong Christian faith. As a child and young adult she attended Antioch Primitive Baptist Church in Twin City and later attended First Assembly of God in Savannah.

Nell’s greatest joy was being Granny to her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren. She would light up anytime any of them were around. She would always call them over to “ give granny a kiss”. She spoiled them by scratching their backs and rocking them to sleep.

She is preceded in death by her husband, James Tuten; her brother, Harold Williams; sisters, Madge Wilson and Latrell McKenzie; son-in-law, Bill Ennis; and great grandchildren, Aaron Ennis and Katelyn Ennis.

Nell is survived by her daughter, Neva Ennis; son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Jan Wells; grandchildren, Billy Ennis, Michelle Bazemore, Alyssa Ennis, Jennifer (Luke) Parker, and Christopher (Ashleigh) Wells; nine great grandchildren; seven great great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She will be deeply missed by her family and all who had the privilege of knowing her. The family would like to thank SunCare Hospice and a heartfelt thanks to Pam, Angela, Taylor, and Jerri who have been so wonderful and caring to our Granny and to us. We could never thank them enough for all the support, love, and care they have shown to us all.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, September 4, 2026 at 1:00 p.m. at Baker McCullough Funeral Home, Hodgson Memorial Chapel (7415 Hodgson Memorial Drive, Savannah, GA 31406).

Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens (315 Greenwich Road, Savannah, GA 31404).

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
