Ronald Gene Nonnenberg

April 1, 1940 — September 27, 2025

Ronald Gene Nonnenberg, 85, passed away September 27, 2025, in Clemson, South Carolina. Ron was born April 1, 1940, in Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania to Frederick Kenneth and Olive Blanche Nonnenberg. He attended Clarion and Duquesne University, but was most proud of his military education. That included Officers Candidate School, The US Army Flight School, and subsequent tour of duty in Vietnam from May 1968 to May 1969. While in Vietnam, he was a Cessna L-19 Bird Dog pilot. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, The Bronze Star, Air medal with V-Device, the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry among other medals. After his military service, he worked for the Federal Aviation Administration for 30 years.

Ron was fondly known by lots of names – Nonny or Big Daddy to his friends and Pap to his grandchildren. Nonny was an avid golfer and was a member of the Savannah Golf Club for 39 years where he made friendships that lasted for the rest of his days. After relocating to South Carolina in 1989, he established many friendships at Boscobel Golf Club while retaining his out of town membership at the Savannah Golf Club. Ron and Eileen were members at Mount Zion United Methodist Church in Central, South Carolina.

When the Nonnenberg girls began attending Clemson University, he joined IPTAY and has been a member and football season ticket holder for 41 years. Ron loved many things in life – his family, the Clemson Tigers, Tybee Island, the Pittsburgh Steelers, a good party, and the words of John 3:16.

Survivors include wife Eileen Linderman Nonnenberg, daughters Celeste Koncul (Stephen), Ruth Taylor (Mark), Ronni Farrell (Keith), six grandsons Stephen Koncul Jr. (Maggie), Joseph Koncul (Jessie), Thomas Koncul, Carson Taylor, Dylan Taylor, Seamus Farrell, and one granddaughter, the princess, Maria Koncul Smith (Justin). He is also survived by nephews Eric and Keith Nonnenberg of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Merle.

A graveside service with military honors will be held Friday, October 3, 2025 at one o’clock at Hillcrest Abbey East, 1600 Wheaton Street, Savannah, GA 31404
