Robert "Dennis" King, age 76, of Savannah went into the Lord's arms on June 20th, 2026.
Dennis was born on March 13, 1950 as the oldest of three sons born to Sanders J. King, Jr. and Marcia Priester King-Horton. Dennis graduated from Chatham Christian in 1968. He went on to attend Armstrong State Colle for three years and attended the last graduating class at John Marshall Law School in May of 1978, earning his Doctor of Jurisprudence. Dennis was admitted to the Bar for the State of Georgia in 1978 and practiced Municipal Law and Federal Social Security Law.
Dennis began his law enforcement career in the early 70's attending the first "Rookie" class at the Savannah Police Academy, with the Savannah Police Department. He later transferred to Municipal Court of Chatham County under Judge Victor Mulling, Senior Judge Municipal Court Chatham County, Georgia, as Chief Deputy for Municipal Court. In 1984, under Walter Mitchell, Sheriff of Chatham County, all three courts were merged, and Dennis was appointed as Lieutenant, later promoted to Captain, and then to Major in charge of the legal section for the Chatham County Sheriff's Office Department. In early April 1992, Dennis was appointed Sheriff of Chatham County to hold that position until a special election was conducted in July of 1992. Sheriff King started the K9 unit for Chatham County during his tenure as sheriff. He also started the Chatham County Sheriff's Reserve and Boat Division. Once the new sheriff was elected, Dennis reverted to his position as Major in charge of the Legal Division until his retirement in 2007 after almost 37 years of faithful law enforcement service.
In the fall of 1968, Dennis enlisted as a medic in the Georgia Air National Guard at the 165th Military Airlift Group, Savannah, GA. He attended basic training at Lackland Airforce Base in San Antonio, Texas and in January of 1969 he trained as a medic and pararescue for the Airforce System at Sheppard Airforce Base in Wichita Falls, Texas. During his years of service, Dennis functioned as a medic, nurse, surgical assistant, lab technician, and many other medical duties qualifying as an Airforce Physician's Assistant. Dennis attended Southside Fire & EMS training as an EMT intermediate. He graduated in 1999 and was National Registry Certified,
Dennis was an almost 50 year member of Acacia Lodge #452, F.&A.M. of Savannah, GA. He was also a member of the York Rite Bodies of Savannah and The Scottish Rite - Valley of Savannah. Dennis was also at one time active with the Alee Shrine Temple as "Garfield the Cat" with the Character Unit serving as President.
Dennis is survived by his loving wife of almost 53 years, Janice; his two daughters, Stephanie King-Peterson (Michael) and Sandi King (fiancé, Jerry Cannon); and six grandchildren, Dakota Robert Sanders King, Jayden Lawrence King, Heaven'ly Raine Peterson, Cookie Mahaleigh Peterson, Michael James Peterson, III, and Aston James Parker Peterson. He is also survived by his brother, Richard "Daniel" King (Charlene); niece, Kateyn King; and other family throughout.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 28, 2026 from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Baker McCullough Funeral Home, Hodgson Memorial Chapel (7415 Hodgson Memorial Drive, Savannah, GA 31406).
A funeral service will be held on Monday, June 29, 2026 at 1:00 p.m. at Baker McCullough Funeral Home, Hodgson Memorial Chapel (7415 Hodgson Memorial Drive, Savannah, GA 31406).
Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens (315 Greenwich Road, Savannah, GA 31404).
Honorary pallbearers will be the Municipal Court Deputies and Staff of Chatham County, the Officers of Acacia Lodge #452, F.&A.M. as well as all of his Masonic Brothers, and The 165th Military Airlift Wing of Savannah, Georgia.
Honors will be rendered by the Air Force Honor Guard and Masonic Services performed by Acacia Lodge #452, F.&A.M.
