Richard Grant Magune

Mr. Richard G. "Dick" Magune, age 89, of Tybee Island, died Tuesday, April 15, 2025, at Summer Breeze Senior Living after an extended battle with Alzheimer's disease. Dick was born on December 14, 1935, in Worcester, Massachusetts, to Robert R. Magune and Barbara Popplewell Dodge. He lived in Chatham County for nearly seventy years and was a 1953 graduate of Savannah High School. After graduating high school, Richard enlisted in the United States Navy in February 1954, serving during the Korean War. He received the National Defense Service Medal. His last duty assignment was aboard the escort destroyer USS Fred T Berry (DDE-858). After completing his active naval service, he remained in the Navy Reserve. He joined the United States Army Corps of Engineers in January 1958, serving over thirty-three years before retiring in October 1991. He served at King Abdulaziz Naval Base, Saudi Arabia, receiving numerous accolades. He was a licensed Coast Guard Captain in charge of surveying and dredging boats for the Savannah District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Dick was a member of Trinity Chapel Methodist Church, the Optimist Club, Tybee Island American Legion Post 154, and the Tybee Island Historical Society. He was a PADI Dive Master. He loved Civil War history, antiquing, relic hunting, and woodworking. After his retirement, he became a handyman and often said, "I can fix anything but a broken heart." Dick was very headstrong and colorful. He loved a good story and was a jokester. He is preceded in death by his wives, Nancy E. Rawls Evans, Lucille McGrady, and Gloria Glisson Magune; his daughter, Dawn A. Magune Zabawa; his parents; and his siblings, Deborah A. Loupasis and Roger A. Dodge.

His family includes his children, Stephen G. Magune Sr. of Tybee Island and Lisa M. Venhaus and her husband Matt of Savannah; his grandchildren, Jennifer Zabawa, Jessica Maze, Amanda Powers, Chelsea Maze, Stephen Magune Jr., and Kaitlyn Magune; and twenty great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life service will be held on Sunday, April 27, 2025, at Trinity Chapel Methodist Church at 4:30 p.m., with Pastor Sue Jackson and Pastor Grotheer officiating.
