Richard Kornel Bennertz

Richard “Dick” Kornel Bennertz, age 89, of Savannah Ga, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 12, 2025, at his residence surrounded by his family.

He was born on August 11, 1935 in Washington D.C. to Richard Bennertz and Julianna Erbacher Bennertz. Dick was a first generation American, born to German Immigrants. He and his wife lived in The Villages, Florida, relocating ten years ago to Savannah, Georgia in order to be near his daughter and grandchildren.Dick was a graduate of the University of Maryland and He worked for The Department of Defense Technical Information Center as a Director in computer security during the development of the first computer
systems. Dick was a devoted husband to his wife, Joan of 66 years, a loving father to his daughter, Jackie, and a doting grandfather to his four grandchildren, Austin, Trey, Emma and Elyssa. He loved spending time listening to his grandson, Austin, play worship music; attending his grandson, Trey’s tennis tournaments; and cheering his granddaughters’, Emma and Elyssa on at swim meets. He enjoyed golf, accomplishing a total of five hole-in-ones in his lifetime and was a committed fan of the Washington Redskins. He enjoyed spending time working in the yard with his wife Joan, finishing the day off with one of her delicious dinners and polishing off an entire pack of cookies. Dick was a member of Bible Baptist Church, accepting Christ as his Savior at the age of 85. Even though he leaves a hole in our hearts for now, he leaves his family a legacy of love, integrity and sacrifice. We will meet again beloved on those “Heavenly Shores”.

Dick is survived by his wife of 66 years,Joan; his daughter, Jackie (Eric); and his grandchildren, Austin, Trey, Emma and Elyssa.

The funeral service will be held on Friday, June 20, 2025, at Bible Baptist Church, 4700 Skidaway Road, Savannah, GA 31404, at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Kelly McInerney officiating.
