It is with profound sadness and deep respect that we announce the passing of Nancy Shuman Sammons, born on January 4, 1939, in Ridgeland, SC passed away on July 27, 2026. A woman of great strength and determination, Nancy was a beacon of light for those who were fortunate enough to know her. As President Russell M. Nelson said, "The joy we feel has little to do with the circumstances of our lives and everything to do with the focus of our lives.” Nancy embodied this sentiment through her life of service and the love she shared with those around her.
Nancy made her home in and around Columbia, South Carolina, for 60 years, and having been born and raised in the south she was undeniably a true southern cook. She spent many years as a homemaker, creating a warm environment full of good food, laughter, unconditional love and of course PET chocolate ice cream.
Nancy was a devoted, lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and she exemplified the principles through a life of service. She served in many capacities and roles in her congregations but, her favorites, were as a visiting teacher and a temple worker in the Columbia, SC temple. She dedicated much of her time to serving those around her. She served a mission for the Church in New York City, New York from 2008-2009.
Nancy's strength and grace were the foundation of her family, and her spirit will continue to guide them. She was a loving mother of six: Brenda (Terry) Millgate, Linda (Paul) Giler, Glenda (Dennis) Gantt, Sharon (Dave) Wharton, Hugh (Stephanie) Sammons, and Justin (Shayleen) Sammons, a proud grandmother to twenty-one grandkids and a great-grandmother to twenty-one darling great grandbabies. Through the love she shared with them she has surely left a legacy of family, faith, love and the importance of watching a good movie with a great dessert.
Nancy was preceded in death by her father, John Shuman, and mother, Gertie Padgett, three sisters and two brothers. We know they were as excited to see her as she absolutely was to see them. Nancy knew and found comfort in the knowledge that families are part of Heavenly Father's eternal plan and that through Jesus Christ, family relationships can continue beyond this life. If you’re looking to honor Nancy, simply love the people around you.
Nancy's funeral services will be held Friday August 7, 2026 at 10 a.m. at Baker McCullough Funeral Home Hodgson Memorial Chapel (7415 Hodgson Memorial Dr, Savannah, GA 31406). She will be laid to rest in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens (315 Greenwich Rd, Savannah, GA 31404) alongside her mother and her sisters. In lieu of flowers simply look for more opportunities to serve those around you. Please share a memory here to comfort those who loved her and serve as a reminder of the remarkable woman Nancy was.
