Obituary

Michael Craig “Gator” South, 70, of Savannah, Georgia, passed away peacefully on October 8,

2026, in Savannah, Georgia, surrounded by his loving family and dear friends. He was born

September 28, 1956, in Savannah, Georgia, to LaVerne Joseph South, Jr. and Gertrude Murphy

South.

Michael, affectionately known as “Gator,” was a dedicated member of ILA Local 1475 Clerks

and Checkers, where he proudly belonged for the past 40 years. His four decades of membership

reflected his dedication, commitment, and the lasting relationships he built throughout his years

of service.

Gator had a natural gift for making people laugh. He was a true comedian who could find humor

in almost any situation and had a way of bringing laughter and lightheartedness wherever he

went. He was fun to be around, and those who knew him will remember his quick wit, his

personality, and the joy he brought to the people around him. His laughter and ability to make

others smile will be deeply missed.

Michael was preceded in death by his parents, LaVerne Joseph South, Jr. and Gertrude Murphy

South, and his siblings, LaVerne J. South, III; Linda South Hodges; Dennis M. South; and David

A. South.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Allison South; his child, Ashlee South (Antonella); his

brother, Stephen South; his grandchildren, Amber South and Emma Grace McGee; his beloved

aunt, Sister Denis Marie Murphy; nieces Lauren (Kevin), Molly (Will) and nephew LaVerne (Jared). as well as numerous cousins, extended family members, and

dear friends.

Michael will be remembered as Gator—a man who could make people laugh, brighten a room,

and make even ordinary moments memorable. His humor, friendship, and the love he shared

with his family and friends will live on in the many memories he leaves behind.

Family and friends are invited to come together to celebrate Michael’s life, share memories, and

honor the lasting impact he had on all who knew and loved him.
