Mary Walton Waitzman, age 70, of Savannah passed away unexpectedly on Friday, April 11, 2025. Savannah has lost one kind, spirited, generous soul. She was one of a kind. Her smile was contagious. She could make everyone laugh. Mary touched so many people around her. And she will be deeply missed.
Mary was born on March 21, 1955, in Huntsville, Alabama to the late Samuel David Waitzman, Jr. and the late Ann Kearns Updike Waitzman. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Ed (Edwin), Dave (David), and Don (Donald) Waitzman.
Mary moved from Atlanta in 1985 to Savannah. She fell in love with our beautiful city. She became one of the best tour guides in the area giving tours of Savannah and the surrounding area. Mary started giving tours on carriages, then walking tours and then became a step-on guide for motor coaches. Before retiring, she was a step-on tour guide and co-owner of Adventures in Savannah. Any time friends or family came to town, Mary would give them a tour of Savannah. She loved sharing her beautiful city.
Mary joined and supported the Grateful Goldens Dog Rescue group in our area. She helped the group raise money by giving tours. If you ever saw a large group of folks with their golden retrievers in tow, you would find Mary at the front of the group giving a tour.
Survivors include her partner of 40 years, Cynthia Gay; brother, Douglas Waitzman; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Humane Society of Savannah at 7215 Sallie Mood Drive, Savannah, GA 31406 or to your favorite charity.
