Martha McDowell Exley, age 94, passed away Thursday, February 26, 2026, in Mt. Dora, Florida. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Roger Wilford Exley, Sr., her son, Roger Wilford Exley, Jr., and her parents William W. and Loic S. McDowell.
Martha was born in New York City. At age two, her family moved to Savannah, GA, where she lived until age 86. Martha moved to Mt. Dora, FL. in 2018.
After graduating from Savannah High School, Martha attended St. Joseph’s Nursing School, interning in New Orleans. Upon graduation she worked as a labor and delivery nurse for 42 years. During her career she worked at St. Joseph’s, Memorial and Candler Hospitals before retiring at age 62.
Martha married Roger and together they raised six children and were active members of the Lutheran Church of the Ascension. They were also members of the Savannah Elks Lodge and enjoyed dancing on Saturday nights with family and friends.
After retirement, Martha enjoyed many years of volunteering. She worked as a volunteer nurse at the local health clinic in Savannah. She also provided sewing classes at a local church where she organized yearly fashion shows for her students. Martha also began painting classes and discovered a new talent. On occasion, her art was displayed at local art shows.
Martha is survived by 5 children, 11 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren and several cousins.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 7th, 2026 from 4:00 until 6:00pm at Baker McCullough Funeral Home, Hodgson Memorial Chapel (7415 Hodgson Memorial Drive, Savannah, GA 31406).
A graveside service will be held on Sunday, March 8th, 2026 at 2:00pm at Bonaventure Cemetery.
