Louise Mitchell was born on February 8, 1936 to the late Emma Louise West and Harry B. Hunter in Guyton, Georgia. Louise passed away peacefully on May 11, 2025 after a brief illness. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 42 years, John Alexander Mitchell, Sr.; and two brothers, John Jr. and James Overstreet. She is survived by three sisters, Pasty Lee Kent and Marie Grant, both of Guyton, GA and Ruby Jaby of Marlboro, MD ; three children, Maxine Drake, Anthony (Anita) Mitchell, and Stanley Mitchell; seven grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; five great great grandchildren; two godsons; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Louise spent most of her life in Savannah, GA. She was employed at Gottlieb's Bakery for 32 years before embarking on a new career path as a housekeeper with Hyatt Regency Hotel where she worked for nearly 20 years. During her tenure there, she received many accolades including Employee of the year in 2001, for which she was very proud. She was devoted to her adopted family, The Belins.
Louise was devoted to her family, and as their matriarch, she often led them with her faith and strong will, but with a loving touch. She enjoyed cooking for her family and often catered events at her church and around town. She was known for her tomato sandwiches, chicken salad, and chicken parmesan.
Louise was a kind, cheerful, and generous spirit bringing joy to everyone she met. She was always willing to lend a helping hand whenever and wherever needed. She was devoted to serving on her church culinary team.
Louise enjoyed music and live performances and often enjoyed dancing with her grands at family events.
"Mommy" you will be deeply missed. We all had wonderful times with you and was truly blessed to have you in our lives for all these years. Thank you for all the sacrifices you made for us. Life will be very different for us without you in it. But we will go on as you have wanted us to practicing all your good works. We will forever hold you close in our hearts and our spirits. Enjoy your reunion with Daddy.
A funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, May 21, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Benedict the Moor Catholic Church (441 E Broad St, Savannah, GA 31401).
A private family inurment will follow in Woodville Cemetery.
