Louis A. Cowart, a beloved resident of Richmond Hill, Georgia, passed away on Thursday, April 30, 2026. Born in Summit, Georgia, in Emanuel County, Louis led a life of service, dedication, and love, impacting the lives of many.
Louis attended Frog Pond School and later proudly joined the United States Army and served as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division during the Korean Conflict. Professionally, Louis began his career as a pipefitter with Local 188. He later founded Savannah Brush and Chemical, where he worked diligently until his retirement. Louis's dedication was not confined to his work; he also served his community as a member of the Bryan County School Board and as a former deputy sheriff. A cornerstone of his community, Louis was a founding member of the Richmond Hill Recreation Department and was a founding member of Richmond Hill Church of Christ. He was known for his love of the outdoors, spending as much time as he could golfing and fishing.
Louis was predeceased by his parents, Rowan Hudson Cowart and Nannie Pearl Cowart; and his cherished wife of 56 years, Gladys May Cowart. He is survived by his four devoted sons, Robert Louis Cowart (Debra), Mark Cowart (Kim), Jeff Cowart (Angie), and Roger Cowart (Priscilla). He also leaves behind a legacy in his grandchildren, Chris (Katie), Casey (Victoria), Rachel (Jonah), Kevin (Jamie), Jason (Kaelyn), Preston, Wilson, and Adam; his great-grandchildren: Aubrey, Parker, Isla, Ashton, Lexie, Henry, Jolene, Sawyer, Jacob, Niya, Sophia, Sage, William, Grayson, Caroline, and Kinzley; as well as his great-great-grandchildren, Braxton and Easton.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, May 5, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. at Baker McCullough Funeral Home, Hodgson Memorial Chapel (7415 Hodgson Memorial Drive, Savannah, GA 31406).
Interment will follow in Hillcrest Abbey East (1600 Wheaton Street, Savannah, GA 31404).
Visitation will be held on Monday, May 4, 2026 from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Baker McCullough Funeral Home, Hodgson Memorial Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Richmond Hill Church of Christ, 11651 Ford Avenue (Highway 144 East), Richmond Hill, Georgia 31324.
