Mrs. Gladys "Gigi" Marie Schumacher, age 93, of Savannah, died Wednesday, June 4, 2025, at Riverview Health and Rehabilitation Center surrounded by her loving family.
Gigi was born on May 16, 1932 in Helmar, Illinois to Torstein and Helen "nee Erickson" Gjerde . She was a 1948 graduate from Yorkville High School and later graduated from the University of Illinois. She married her husband William "Bill" Schumacher on August 23, 1958. They moved to Savannah in December of 1965. She worked for Chatham County Schools for many years teaching mainly in first grade. Gigi was a faithful member of Trinity Lutheran Church for almost sixty years and was very involved with LWML, Bible Study, teaching, Vacation Bible School, and the Over Fifties group. In her spare time she enjoyed sewing, doing puppetry, baking, piano playing, crafting, doing genealogy and family history, traveling, and mailing birthday cards to family. She especially loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. She was a loving and caring mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Gigi is preceded in death by her husband of fifty-five years, William "Bill" Schumacher; her parents; and her siblings, Harold, Rachel, Raymond, Telfred, Eleanor and Laverne.
Her family includes her five children, Stephen Schumacher and his wife Amy of Naperville, Illinois, Karl Schumacher of Savannah, Heidi Swanson and her husband Gary of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Rose Almanza and her husband Sergio of Madison, Alabama, and Jon Schumacher and his wife Traci of Savannah; her twenty grandchildren, Nate Swanson, Jacob Swanson (Emma), Ben Swanson (Kate), Caleb Swanson, Elisabeth Kay (Joe), Luke Swanson, Seth Swanson, Isaac Swanson, Tad Swanson, Paul Schumacher, Sarah Lieb (Tim), Justin Almanza (Caroline), Adam Almanza (Sally), Amelia Gilbert (Curtis), Sophie Almanza, Alex Almanza, Ryan Schumacher, Anna Schumacher, Will Schumacher, and Evan Schumacher; eleven great-grandchildren, Nola Gilbert, Kenzie Gilbert, Jett Gilbert, Oliver Swanson, Emmett Lieb, Owen Lieb, Charlotte Lieb, Claire Lieb, Annelise Almanza, Teddy Swanson, and Adeline Kay; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
All are invited to a visitation on Saturday, June 14, 2025 at Trinity Lutheran Church (12391 Mercy Blvd., Savannah) from 9:00 am until 11:00 am. The funeral service will follow at 11:00 on Saturday, June 14, 2025 at Trinity Lutheran with Pastor Jeff Webb officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwich Cemetery. Following the burial, all are invited to a luncheon at Trinity. Memorials may be designated to Trinity Lutheran Church.
