Mr. George Harland Zittrauer, age 81, of Guyton, died June 4, 2025, at Memorial Health Medical Center.
George was born on May 12, 1944 in Hinesville, Georgia to Otto Harland Zittrauer and Myrtle Underwood Zittrauer and lived in the coastal empire most of his life. He was a 1964 graduate of Savannah High School, after high school he joined the United States Air Force. George was stationed in Spain for most of his career and received the National Defense Service Medal and the Air Force Good Conduct Medal. After his service in the Air Force, he worked with Great Dane Trailers as a welder for twenty-nine and half years. George was an avid deer hunter and houndsman. He was a 30+ year member at Bethesda Church on Midland Road. Affectionately known as “Papa” , he especially loved spending time with his five grandchildren. He was a loyal, dedicated, genuine, family man who would let u know what was on his mind. George was a loving husband, father and grandfather and is preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, Elmyra Close and Sarah Howard; his brothers, Burtram and Bartow Zittrauer.
His surviving family includes his wife of fifty-six years, Marilyn Joyce Burke Zittrauer; his sons, Russell Eric Zittrauer and his wife Kristen of Savannah and David Harland Zittrauer and his wife Wendy of Guyton; his sister, Rose Marette Irby of Pensacola, Florida; five grandchildren, Samatha Grace Zittrauer, Paulus Daniel Zittrauer, Kendall Kay Zittrauer, Aralyn Jean Zittrauer, and Levi Harland Zittrauer; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
The family will receive friends on Sunday evening, June 8, 2025 at Baker McCullough Funeral Home Garden City Chapel, 2794 Highway 80 West, Garden City, GA 31408 from 6:00 until 8:00. The graveside service will be held on Monday morning, June 9, 2025 at Bethesda Church on Midland Road Cemetery at 10:00 with Pastor Matt Waldren officiating.
