Obituary

Horace Lewis was born February 7, 1943 in Claxton, Georgia to James Benjamin and Loree Lewis and grew up in Silk Hope. His family included an older brother, Russell, and three sisters, Judy, Janice and Sarah; with his parents, brother Russell Lewis, sisters Judy Kersey, and Janice Nash preceding him in death. He spent his time hunting and fishing. Even later in life he could shoot the wings off a fly from 300 yards.

Horace got a job at Thoni’s on Highway 17 in his younger years. It was on just a random day here that he met Marie Bell. They were married 62 years and had two children, Floyd and Eleanor. Horace worked at National Wire and learned to the trade of being a forklift mechanic and still worked jobs on the side under car hoods. Horace always wanted someone around to hand him tools and share his knowledge as he worked at JC Lewis Lincoln Mercury to Hyster. Horace has one grandson, Matthew. Horace bonded with him in everything they did. They traveled together, worked on the house and Horace assisted with Matthew achieving Eagle Scout. They hunted, fished and camped. Horace was so very happy to share every experience with his grandson. With the birth of Alex, Emily and Oran (the great grands), he attended every event and gladly listened to them try to school him about technology. He always had open arms for them and a strong shoulder. When Lonnie came into the picture, Horace saw this as an opportunity to have someone around that didn’t mind going to the country at 3 a.m. and getting driven around on dirt roads for hours listening to the family history.

It wasn’t until later that Horace and Marie discovered a love of cruises. They went to multiple locations, and he learned what it was like to sit back and take a break.

Horace is survived by his son, Floyd Lewis Jr., and his daughter, Eleanor Tyler (Lonnie). His cherished grandson, Matthew Lewis Faford (Lindsey), and eight precious great-grandchildren—Alex, Emily, Oran, Lillian, Kensley, Lea, Aiden, and Natalie—were lights of his life. His beloved sister, Sarah Counterman Harris, also survives him, providing comfort and continuity to the family.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday October 13, 2026 from 11:00 am to 12:00 Noon with a Memorial Service starting at 12:00 Noon at Silk Hope Baptist Church 4929 Pineland Dr. Savannah, Ga 31405.
