Elizabeth Eugenia (Strickland) Johnson passed away peacefully on July 23, 2026. Known to family and friends as Momma, Sister, Betty and Ms. Betty, she was preceded in death by her parents, Owen Sr. and Elizabeth (Ruiz) Strickland, and two older brothers, Owen Jr. (Sonny) and Robert (Bobby) Strickland. She is survived by her younger brother Walter Strickland, four sons, Billy, Jamie, Michael and Sonny (Lauri) Fields; grandchildren Karen, Ashley, Mallory, Justin, Meredith and Suzanna; and great grand-children Aurora, Reagan and Lux, and a host of nieces and nephews. She was born and raised in West Savannah and Wilmington Island, attended Savannah High School and Armstrong College before marrying the late Billy W. Fields, with whom she shared her four sons. She was the only one of her siblings not to have served in the United States Navy; however, she frequently used sailor language at any opportunity, particularly while raising boys. She was employed by Chatham County for many years before working for several local Savannah automobile dealerships providing title registration service. She was an amazing southern cook, and her holiday recipes have been frequently replicated by her oldest son, Billy, who dutifully served as her primary caregiver for many years. She was briefly in the care of Pruitt Healthcare of Savannah for which the family is grateful for their compassionate service.
Arrangements are in the care of Baker McCullough Funeral Home, 7415 Hodgson Memorial Drive, Savannah, GA, 31506. Visitation will take place Sunday, July 26, 2026, from 5pm – 7pm. A private family burial will be held at a later date.
