It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Doris Iwilda Spikes, age 91, of Savannah, Georgia, who passed away peacefully surrounded by family at Candler Hospital on Sunday, October 25, 2026. She was born on November 10, 1934, in Screven, Georgia to the late George W. Ray and the late Gustie Hipps Ray.
After graduating from Jesup High School, Doris moved to Savannah, where she attended Draughon's Practical Business College. Over the years, Doris' professional life was multifaceted. She was a pastor's wife, choir director, worked for Church of God General Headquarters, and worked for Lifeway Baptist Book Store. She also taught piano for Portman's Music Store and was a Sunday school teacher, shaping the minds and hearts of many. Doris was also a member of Savannah Baptist Temple for 19 years.
Doris enjoyed life's simplicities; she loved gardening, reading, and traveling with her family. Music was a passion of hers and she loved to pass the time at her piano. Most importantly, Doris cherished her family above all else. She was a loving mother and grandmother, devoted wife, and faithful church member.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Rev. William C Williford; her son, Carey Dwayne Williford; stepson, Vincent Spikes; and her grandson, Ashley Hubbard.
She is survived by her loving husband, Gettis E. Spikes, with whom she spent almost 20 wonderful years; daughters, Karen W. Hubbard and Donna W. Clark; stepdaughter, Billie McAleer; stepson, Earl Spikes; brothers, Clarence Ray, George Ray, and Eschol Ray; sisters, Rosalind Deal and Pauline Deal; and 25 beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A visitation will be held Saturday, November 21, 2026 at Savannah Baptist Temple, 1151 Mohawk St, Savannah, Georgia 31419, at 10:15 AM with a memorial service to follow at 11 AM.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Samaritan's Purse, PO Box 3000, Boone, NC 28607.
