Obituary

We are saddened to announce the passing of Debra Ann Schmidt Newman on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, at the age of 56. Born on a sunny Sunday in Savannah, Georgia, on July 26, 1970, Debra spent her life dedicated to family, love, and community.

Debra was a devoted homemaker who delighted in caring for her family and sharing her warmth with everyone she encountered. Known for her expressive personality, Debra adored watching soap operas and spent as much quality time as possible with her beloved grandsons, who brought boundless joy into her world. Her family fondly remembers her as the best mother anyone could ask for, a testament to her compassion, commitment, and nurturing spirit.

Debra is lovingly survived by her spouse of over 40 years, James M. Newman, who stood faithfully by her side through life’s trials and triumphs. Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Ashley Newman (and spouse Thomas L. Rhett, Sr.) and Morgan Newman (and spouse Dashon L. Mobley, Sr.), and her cherished grandsons, Thomas Lee Rhett, Jr. and Dashon Leonard Mobley, Jr. Debra leaves behind her siblings, Penny Mitchell, and brothers Roy and Gary Livingston. Her extended family, including treasured nieces, nephews, and friends, carries forward her legacy of kindness and love.

Preceding her in death were her beloved parents, Larry G. Schmidt and Mary Helen Hilliard Schmidt, who now embrace her once again.

Reflective of her wishes and gentle nature, there will be no public services held. Family and friends will honor her love for privacy with intimate remembrances, celebrating the profound impact she had on countless lives.
