Bessie Turner Chappas, 93, went into the arms of the angels, on September 3, 2025 under the care of Hospice of Savannah. She was born in Kalamata, Greece, moved here as a child, and this transition formed her life as an author of children’s books and other publications, professional storyteller, newspaper columnist and retired media specialist.
She was an active member of her church, St. Paul’s Greek Orthodox Church and the Philoptochos Society. She loved to help with the Greek Festival to share the Greek culture with the community. Her extensive travels gave her experiences which she brought into her storytelling with the Toastmasters as well as her company called the Savannah Story Spinners. Although, Bess was born in the 1930’s, her legacy of entrepreneurship, self-sufficiency, and “never give up spirit” are traits of a modern woman which she leaves to her three children, three grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. She is survived by her children Theodora Chappas Teuton, Georgianne Chappas Taylor, and Dimitri Harry Chappas along with partner, Chris. She also is survived by her grandchildren Chris Teuton along with partner, Zoe; Zachary Taylor along with partner, Carissa; and Nicholas Taylor along with partner, Birch. She also is survived by her great grandchildren, Benjamin and Evelyn Teuton.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, September 8, 2025 at St. Paul’s Greek Orthodox Church. Burial will follow the funeral service at Bonaventure Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to St. Paul’s Greek Orthodox Church, 14 W. Anderson Street, Savannah, GA 31401.
